One sunny spring morning, I suddenly thought that I wanted to go to Kodaiji Temple. I went out immediately, arrived after 10 o’clock, and was able to visit slowly without crowds. Here, I will introduce what I saw and my impressions.
晴れた春のある日の朝、ふっと高台寺へ行きたいなと思いました。早速出かけ、10時過ぎに到着し、人込みもなく、ゆっくりと拝観することができました。ここに、私が見たものと感想を紹介させていただきます。

About Kodaiji Temple – 高台寺について
What is Kodaiji Temple？ – 高台寺とは？
It was introduced in the leaflet I received as a temple built at the request of Nene Kitamandokoro, the lawful wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a military commander who ruled Japan during the Sengoku period in the 16th century. . The precincts are a garden, and a beautiful garden spreads out in front of a building called Hojo. Seated statues were placed in a hall called Otamaya where Hideyoshi and Kita no Mandokoro were enshrined.
16世紀の戦国時代に天下人となった武将、豊臣秀吉の菩提を弔うため、正室（正妻）の北政所ねねが懇願して創建されたお寺と、いただいたリーフレットに紹介されていた。境内は庭園となっていて、方丈と呼ばれる建物の前に綺麗なお庭が広がっていた。秀吉と北政所がお祀りされている霊屋（おたまや）と呼ばれるお堂に、坐像が安置されていた。

My impression – 感想
The precincts are wide, and it feels like the building of the temple is built in a wonderful garden with Higashiyama in the background. There are two large ponds and the Kaisando Hall is built between them. I took off my shoes in the Hojo and enjoyed the garden in front. The weeping cherry tree was in full bloom. The ‘Otamaya’ is located on a small hill, and the seated statues of “Hideyoshi” and “Kita no Mandokoro” are enshrined there, giving it a special atmosphere. It took me about 40 minutes as I walked slowly. If you look around a little more thoroughly, you may need about an hour.
Kodaiji Temple is one of the must-see spots in Kyoto. Also, I would definitely like to visit in another season.
境内は広く、東山を背にした素晴らしい庭園の中にお寺の建物が建っているという感じ。大きな池が2つありその間に「開山堂」が建つ。「方丈」には靴を脱いで上がり、前の庭を堪能した。枝垂桜は見事に咲いていた。「霊屋」は小高い丘の上にあり、秀吉と北政所の坐像が安置されており、特別な雰囲気を感じた。ゆっくり歩いて回ったので40分ほどかかった。もう少し徹底的に見て回ると1時間ぐらい必要かもしれません。
高台寺は京都の見逃せないスポットの一つでしょう。また、別の季節に是非訪れてみたいところ。

If you want to go directly, get off at the Kyoto City Bus “Higashiyama Yasui” bus stop and go up to the mountain on Kodaiji Nanmon-dori where there is a stone torii gate. About 7-8 minutes on foot.
When walking from the Gion area, enter “Yasaka Shrine” and exit “Nanroumon”, or exit from the east side (mountain side) of “Chorakukan” in “Maruyama Park”. Walk along “Nene-no-Michi” and go up Kodaiji Temple’s “Daidokorozaka” slop. About 10 minutes on foot.
If you walk from Kiyomizudera, it takes about 15 minutes through “Nineizaka” (“Ninenzaka”) and “Sanneizaka” (“Sannenzaka”).
直接行く場合は、京都市バス「東山安井」バス停で下車し、石の鳥居のある高台寺南門通りを山の方へ上がっていくと徒歩7～8分ほど。
祇園あたりから歩く場合、「八坂神社」から、南楼門を出て町家の間の坂を抜けて上がり「ねねの道」に沿ってあるくか、あるいは、「円山公園」に抜け「長楽館」の東側（山側）ある出口を出て、そのまま真っ直ぐ方向にある「ねねの道」に沿って歩き、高台寺の「台所坂」を上がる。徒歩で、10分程度というところ。
清水寺から歩く場合、「二寧坂（二年坂）」や「産寧坂（三年坂）」を通って15分程度というところ。
